Optional Competitions

At Miss United Southern States, our optional competitions are designed to give contestants additional opportunities to shine, express their individuality, and be recognized for their unique strengths.

Participation is completely optional and created to enhance the overall pageant experience in a fun, flexible, and rewarding way.

Optional Competition Entry Fees

Optional competitions are designed to be flexible and affordable for families.

• $25 per optional competition entered

• Model: $35 (includes official event t-shirt)

Talent Guidelines:

• Contestants may perform up to 3 different talent routines (separate entry fees apply)

• Each talent entry is judged separately

Many contestants choose to participate in multiple optionals to maximize their time on stage and opportunities for awards.

Stage Optional Competitions

Casual Wear

• Stylish, age-appropriate outfit of choice

• Focus on confidence, personality, and overall presentation

Fun Fashion

• High-energy and personality-driven

• Trendy, sparkly, or themed looks encouraged

Fitness Attire

• Athletic or fitness-inspired outfit

• Focus on confidence, energy, and presentation

• Promotes a healthy and active lifestyle

Swimsuit (One-Piece Only)

• Age-appropriate one-piece swimsuit required

• Focus on confidence, poise, and stage presence

• Designed to remain tasteful and family-friendly

Talent

• Showcase a performance or special skill

  • Examples include:

    • Dance

    • Vocal

    • Instrument

    • Creative performance

Spokesmodel

• Short introduction - name and one fun fact

• Focus on personality and communication

• Older contestants will be asked predefined questions.  Please see handbook. 

• Runway

Fashion-forward presentation

• T-shirt provided with black leggings - pageant shoes.

• Emphasis on style, attitude, and confidence

Interview (Princess Division & Up)

• Panel style.  The judges want to get to know you better.  No platform questions. 

• A positive and confidence-building experience

Miss Photogenic

• Judges evaluate natural beauty and camera presence

Portfolio of Distinction

• A collection of images showcasing versatility, style, and confidence

Queen’s Essay Award

• A written piece highlighting personality, goals, or personal story

Creative Expression Showcase (Non-Performing Talent)

• Recognition of talents that are not performed on stage

• Examples may include art, design, writing, or other creative skills

Volunteer Service (See Presidential Award)

• Exceptional style and overall look

Brightest Smile Award

• A smile that lights up the stage

Crown-Worthy Hair

• Beautiful, polished, and well-presented hair

Sparkle & Shine Award

• Outstanding stage presence and confidence

Miss Congeniality (awarded during the final show) 

• Kindness, friendliness, and positive attitude

• Voted on by peers and direct staff

Scheduling of Optional Competitions

• All optional competitions are held on Saturday

• Organized by age division

• Designed to keep the day running smoothly with minimal wait times

National Dinner & Recognition Event (Saturday Evening)

A special celebration honoring contestants who participated and excelled in optional competitions.

Flexible & Fun

Contestants may participate in as many or as few optional competitions as they choose.

There is no requirement—only opportunity.
